It was 44 years ago that Star Trek premiered on NBC. It would be hard for me to think of any other element of American culture that has had a more profound effect on me. Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future was courageous, hopeful, and optimistic. The very first episode, The Man Trap, was on one level a rubber-suit-monster story, but it was also a story about memory, love lost and found, and the desperation of a creature who was the last of her kind.
